Snack Smart with these Suggestions.

If you plan it right, snacks can be part of a nutritious eating plan and offer an energy boost between meals. The best snacks vary depending on your eating style and activity level.

Try these Smart Snacking Habits

Snack only when you are hungry.

It’s easy to snack out of boredom or when you are emotional. Pause and check in with your appetite to see if you are actually hungry to avoid mindless eating.

Plan Ahead

Preparing better-for-you options ahead of time. Cut up some fruits and veggies, set aside portions of air-popped popcorn or low-fat cheese. Find tasty snack recipes from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics here.

Variety is Key

Mix up your combinations to include foods with whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats. For example, try fat-free yogurt with fruit, whole grain crackers with low-fat cheese, or raw veggies with hummus. Get creative to ensure you’re eating something nutritious and satisfying.

Stay Safe

Keep perishable foods in the fridge or a cooler with ice to reduce the risk of food poisoning.

Add Color

Fruits and veggies offer important nutrients, are low in calories, and fill us up. Fresh, frozen, canned and dried can all be part of a nutritious snack and meal plan.

Don’t Forget Drinks

Avoid soda and sugary beverages. Try sparkling water with citrus, mint, or cucumber, unsweetened tea or coffee, low-sodium tomato or vegetable juice, or 100% fruit juice.
