Helpful Heart Health Hacks

February is a month of hearts, but it’s not just about Valentine’s Day—it’s also American Heart Month! At Trinity Health PACE, we understand the importance of a healthy heart. Prioritize your heart health with these tips:

  1. Move more: did you know that regular light exercise can reduce the risk of heart disease and improve your overall health? According to the American Heart Association, every 500 steps you take can directly lower risk of heart disease.

  2. Follow a heart healthy diet: it is important to eat nutritious foods that are low in calories but high in vitamins and fiber, like fruit and vegetables.

  3. Know your numbers: if you have diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure, make sure to watch your numbers and discuss with a doctor how to lower them if they should rise, as these are leading risks for heart disease.

  4. Manage stress: chronic stress can affect your health over time. Take the time to practice stress reducing activities like meditation, gratitude journaling, or deep breath exercises to help yourself relax.

  5. Regular check-ups: visit your doctor for routine check-ups, tests, and screenings to catch heart issues early.

  6. Quit smoking: quitting smoking is one of the most impactful steps you can take to protect the health of your heart. Talk with your doctor to see if they can suggest ways to help you quit smoking or call the Smoker’s Helpline at 1-877-513-5333 for support.

  7. Sleep well: Lack of sleep can raise the risk of heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. Try and aim for at least 8 hours of sleep a night.

Celebrate American Heart Health by incorporating these new habits into your lifestyle and keep your heart beating strong.
