Although we may be excited for the warm weather spring will bring, it can also expose us to allergens and the possibility of colds. Distinguishing between allergies and a cold can be tricky, but is important for proper treatment.

Allergy symptoms include itchy/watery eyes, sniffles that last over a week, clear mucus, and regular reoccurring reactions in specific situations.

Colds, on the other hand, typically leave you with thick, colored mucus, a sore throat, sneezing, low-grade fever, body aches, and a recovery period that can last between 7 and 10 days.

As spring allergies peak due to pollen, mold spores, and more, it's important to talk to your doctor for the right treatment, since not all medicines work for both allergies and colds. Medication is not the only way you can improve your health this spring. The simple act of spring cleaning can help reduce allergens and germs in your home.

Here are some tips to keep your house tidy this spring:

1. Clean the blades of your fans and vents to any airflow units to improve air quality.

2. Organize your belongings to cut down on dust and avoid tripping hazards.

3. Clean your dishwasher with white vinegar and hot water to eliminate residue and germs.

4. Replace old dish sponges regularly to avoid the buildup of germs and bacteria.

5. Clean your vacuum cleaner to make sure it is working properly and sucking away dirt and allergens.

Spring cleaning not only makes the house look clean, but creates a healthier environment for you to be in. It also acts as a nice way to sneak in some occupational therapy by encouraging movement and fitness. By removing allergens and germs, spring cleaning benefits your overall health and well-being during this season of renewal.
