How to Make Fitness Habits Stick
If you are one of many people who made a New Year’s resolution to get more active and work on your fitness goals, you probably know that consistency is key. But what if your motivation isn’t consistent? Read below for a few ideas to get on track and stay active.
Get Real
Revisit your goals and make sure they are realistic. If you haven’t exercised in a while and maybe sit for several hours at your desk job, make sure your plan is reasonable.
Start with Baby Steps
Habits are challenging to form, so it’s important to start small. Make attainable, baby steps so you can add the changes to your routine. Half the battle is getting started! Even if it’s a 15-minute walk, every little bit counts.
Make it Fun
Do you enjoy dancing or yoga? Maybe you want to get back into a sport you once played. Find something of interest that you enjoy. Movement can and should be fun! Get your heart rate up and increase your mood with activities that bring you joy.
Practice Self-Compassion
Changing patterns and forming habits aren’t easy. Be kind to yourself as you make changes. It’s ok if you have off days but fix your focus on moving forward versus beating yourself up. Onward and upward!
Find Community
Fitness is better with friends! Find a local hiking group or try a new gym class where you might find new friendly faces. Having support and accountability often helps consistency with exercise.
