Utility bills on the rise? Save money this season.

When it gets colder out, we often find ourselves with higher gas and electric bills. If you’re living on a budget, heating the home can add up. Stretch a dollar with these suggestions:

1. Dress warmly indoors and keep bundled up. You can first start fighting the chill by wearing multiple layers of thin clothing, to trap warm air close to the body. Make sure to wear socks and keep a cozy blanket nearby for an extra layer.

2. Cover or repair the windows in your home. Windows can suck out a lot of heat from inside the home, especially if not properly insulated. Make sure your windows are properly treated for the colder weather to prevent heat from leaving and cold air from entering. This can look like applying weatherstrips to the window or filling small gaps with caulk or spray foam.

3. Adjust your thermostat so you are not wasting heat and energy. If you are not going to be home during certain hours, lower the temperature to cut costs. A great idea is to upgrade your thermostat to a smart appliance. This allows you to easily monitor and adjust the heat remotely.

4. Use your ceiling fan to stay warm! Many people think ceiling fans are only for keeping cool in the warm months. But did you know that if you reverse your ceiling fan so that it spins clockwise, it will force the warm air down and help with circulation throughout the room? Keep in mind, this will not increase the temperature of an already cold room, but it will help you stay comfortable in a room that is already warm. Remember to turn off the fan when you are not in the room to cut down on usage.

5. Use the sun to help heat your home. During daylight hours, keep your blinds and curtains open to allow the natural light into your home.

These small changes could make a big impact. Give them a try and get through the winter without breaking the bank!
